Citizens Rally on Capitol Steps in Austin Before TNRCC Public Hearing

About 250 people and 13 print and television news organizations attended the rally at noon on June 21.  Chairman Bosse also came out to listen to some of the speeches.  We were all treated to inspirational and rousing speeches by:

· Pam Kingfisher, Indigenous Women’s Network
· LaNell Anderson, Grandparents of East Harris County
· Rev. Roy Malveaux, Environmental justice leader from Beaumont
· Chris Wilson, Lakeway Parents Concerned About Sewage Spray
· TC Calvert, Neighborhoods First Alliance--San Antonio
· Jaye Ross and Barbara Gable Johnson from the Martinez Environmental Group in San Antonio

Lourdes Perez and Bill Oliver sang, and Kerry Awn from Esther’s Follies did a great job of outlining the Governor’s environmental policies--as George Dubbya himself.  Susan Curry from Alpine emcee’d the whole affair, and John Dolley created a giant birthday cake with smoking smokestack candles to mark the Texas Natural Resource Contamination Commission’s approaching 10th birthday.  Free food was donated by White Mountain Foods, Wheatsville Coop, Gaby & Mo’s, Sun Harvest, and Papa John’s Pizza.

The rally and hearing got coverage in 25 newspapers and journals:
